(part 1)
All human beings are a three part being- spirit, soul, and body.
Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing assunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
Our spirit is the eternal part of us (also known as our ghost) that leaves our body when we die, and depending on whether we received Jesus as our Savior or not, goes to heaven or hell.
Our soul is our mind. It is our emotions and intellect.
Our body is the physical part of our being of course.
God is also a three part being. He is one God in three parts:
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
Every terminology in the Bible is dealing with one of the three parts of us. There is no other part of us. When we read the Word we must figure out which part of us is being refered to in each case.
When the bible speaks of our heart, it is speaking of either our spirit or our soul. Our heart is made up of those two parts.
Acts 4:32
And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart [spirit] and of one soul:
I. Peter 3:4
But let it be the hidden man of the heart [spirit], in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
James 1:26
If any man amoung you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart [soul/mind], this man's religion is vain.
Romans 10:6
But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart [soul/mind], Who shall ascend into heaven?
Those two parts of the heart are also divided at the new birth and our old spirit man gets circumsized out and we receive our new man.
Romans 2:28-29
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.
We go from spiritual death to spiritual life. Sometimes when we read scripture it is speaking our spirits, and sometimes our souls.
Our spirit man is made perfect in Christ Jesus.
Hebrews 10:14
For by one offering he has perfected forever them that are sanctified.
Hebrews 12:23
To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect.
Our born again spirit has been made in righteousness and true holiness.
Ephesians 4:24
And that you put on the new man which is made in righteousness and true holiness.
It is in our spirit that we have been "made the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus". (2. Cor. 5:21)
In our spirit the Day Star resides- Jesus (God). (2. Peter 1:19)
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
They Day Star abides in you forever, no matter what your performance is or has been. You "have been sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise".
Ephesians 1:13
In whom you trusted, after that you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also, after that you believed, you were sealed with that Holy Spirit of promise,
Our spirit man can not sin after we are born again. It is impossible:
I. John 3:9
Whosoever is born of God does not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
Our soul, however, stays the same. Our spirit man is the only part of us that is immediatly born again. We don't need to grow up in our spirit, but in our soul. It is our soul that sins, not our spirit man. That is why Paul says for us to "be transformed by the renewing of our minds".
1. Corinthians 15:34
Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame.
If we awake to the fact that we have been made righteous in our spirits, we will sin less through (in) our souls. This is because we are who we believe we are. Even though in our newly created spirits we are as righteous as God is now, unless we renew our minds to who we are on the inside, we will still act on the outside like the old man that we always were.
